FAQs

How do deposits work?

We accept deposits to hold your pick of the litter. Deposits are $500. They are non-refundable, but they are transferable. This means you can move your deposit to a future litter any time up until the time you select your puppy. Your deposit is always good with Split Mountain Doodles. If something comes up and you must hold off, we can put you on a master list and you can let us know when you are ready to get a puppy.

If Sally decides she wants to move her deposit to a different litter and there are already 3 deposits on that list, Sally can be put on the list as 4th pick.

How do deposits for future litters work?

You may place a deposit to get on the list for the Mom/ litter of your choice. Deposits are non refundable but are always transferable to a different litter up until the time you select your puppy. Selections happen in order of deposit placed at 4 weeks old. If you are interested, please contact me, I would love to help you get on the perfect list for your liking.

Where can I buy the puppy food that my pet is eating?

You can find a dealer locator and choose the specific food you are looking for on this link: https://www.nutrenaworld.com/loyall-life-pet-food

What are the options for picking up my puppy?

You may drive to my home to pick up your puppy. You can fly into the Salt Lake City International airport, or the Ogden Airport and I can meet you there with your puppy so that you can have a quick return flight home. Puppies are carried on the plane as a Carry-On in a pet carrier and sit under your seat. They do great on flights. Although it varies airline to airline, most charge a $100 fee to add your puppy to your flight. It is also an option to use our flight nanny for a small fee. I meet him at the airport with your puppy. He brings your puppy on the plane with him to your local airport and meets you there.

How often do you breed your dogs?

Dogs cycle about every 6 months. Some are sooner and some are later. I do my best to breed my momma dogs 2 heats in a row and then skip a heat. Of course, I take in account the health of the momma and make sure all is well before I breed her. It is advised to breed them 4-5 times during their prime years and then retire (or fix) them. I have found that they do great for 2 cycles but then their bodies do really well having a break for that 3 cycle.

How does it even work with a big mom and a little dad?

You’re not the first to ask that and won’t be the last! Artificial insemination is how we get those bigger mommas pregnant with the little dads’ sperm. It is so nice to be able to get those amazing large, desired genetics into a smaller version with a non-shedding coat!

I have or have a family member with severe allergies, will your puppies work for me?

People with severe allergies don’t do well around non hypoallergenic dogs. if allergies are an issue, most people do well around any generation of Doodle as long as their puppy has one furnishing, F/n. If your allergies are sever, it is very likely that you will be okay around a fully furnished doodle. There are many ways to get a fully furnished doodle but knowing for sure must be done through genetic testing. If both parents are genetic tested and found to be FF or fully furnished, then all of the puppies in the litter will also be FF. if one parent is FF and the other parent is F/n half of the puppies will be FF and the other half will be F/n. That litter must be genetic tested for furnishings to know which puppy will be best for your family.

What are furnishings?

There are 3 separate genetics that work together to make a hypoallergenic dog, furnishings, curl, and non-shed. The most important one is furnishings. Each dog has two copies of each gene, one from mom and one from dad. It is assumed that all poodles are fully furnished and have both copies, FF. That is incorrect. Some poodles are F/n meaning they will pass an N to half of the puppies. I make sure that all of the poodles that I breed to are FF so that I know that the full litter will have at least one F. The furnishings are what give that adorable teddy bear look with hair on the face. Furnishings also make the dog non-shedding. The non-shedding gene is a little unknown. Scientists have found that gene in shedding dogs but when it is matched up with a furnished dog, the furnishings kind of take over and create a dog with little to no shedding.

Does a curly dog make for a non-shedding dog?

Unlike what is assumed, no, more curl has nothing to do with no shedding. You can have a dog with no curl that also does not shed.

Where do your momma dogs reside?

Aside from our two family dogs, all our parent dogs reside in guardian homes. It is like a co-ownership for the breeding years of the dog’s life. Trusted families get a family dog to love and spoil. They get to come to my house to have their puppies. This is the perfect way for me to know that my girls are having the best life possible and know that I can spend my time and energy on taking care of new moms and their puppies. All puppies are born and raised at my home.

Why should I choose Split Mountain Doodles?

1. Reputation: We make sure every family leaves happy with the best experience possible.

2. Health guarantee: We provide a 1 year guarantee.

3. Family raised all at my home: unlike most breeders, I personally raise each puppy at my home under my care. I am able to tell you about each puppy and their individual traits.

4. Well socialized: my 5 small children and I take extra care in socializing every puppy.

5. Reasonable rates: Split Mountain Doodle pricing less than the competitors who also offer quality home raised pups.

6. Updates: with my small program, I am able to take extra care in showing the whole learning and growing process. You can watch your puppy grow through many weekly pictures on social media.

Do you sell breeding rights?

While we breed our dogs as pets, I do not mind if you choose to breed your dog. Pricing is the same.

How do I deal with puppies and potty issues?

Your puppy should have the ability to sleep through the night. Sometimes they have a bit of an adjustment once they separate from their siblings but it doesn’t take long for them to adjust to their crate.

We've found that typically puppies can “hold it” half the number of hours of their age; so an 8 week old puppy can hold it 4 hours, a 10 week old puppy can hold it 5 hours, etc. At night you can usually add a couple hours to that formula.  During the day, puppies seem to go through spurts where they have bursts of energy, and then they tucker out and sleep for a while. A young puppy is still a baby and needs quite a bit of sleep.

What do I need to buy for my puppy?

While there are many items that you can buy for a puppy, there are only a few that are essential. You will need a crate, toys, dog shampoo, brush, food and water dishes, and food. Click here to see my recommended dog items.

What vaccinations does my puppy need? What does he/she come with?

Vaccine records come home with every puppy. Your puppy will receive dewormer every two weeks until coming home as well as the first vaccination. The vaccination is a 5-way puppy shot. Your pet will need a second dose 3-4 weeks after the first and again 3-4 weeks after the second. At the time that your pet receives that 3rd puppy shot, your pet will need a rabies vaccine.

What food do you recommend?

At Split Mountain Doodles we love the food Loyall for life.  Our moms eat the All Stages and puppies eat the puppy, You can buy it at some local farm stores as well as Tractor supply and cal ranch. I recommend calling around to see who carries it before going. You will be sent home with a quart sized baggy. You may use that to slowly switch your puppy to a new food if you choose. Start by going half and half and slowly do more of your new food for easy transition.

What are you tips for finding a good veterinarian?

A veterinarian is extremely important for your pet. You're looking for someone to meet your needs and those of your pet, a doctor who has people as well as animal skills. The worst time to look for a vet is when you really need one, so plan ahead and choose wisely.  Ask friends and family near you who they use and why. A good recommendation is always a great place to start.

How often does my doodle need to see a groomer?

Grooming is an essential part of our dogs’ health and hygiene. Pets with healthy, clean coats are happier animals! While some dogs are easy to bathe and brush at home, others need regular trips to the groomer. Doodles do require seeing a groomer for a haircut. The frequency is completely up to you as the owner and what look you would like to maintain with your pet.
